Surfing Northern Spain, Spain
Northern Spain stretches along the Bay of Biscay from Galicia to the Basque Country, offering some of Europe's most powerful and varied surf. Four distinct regions deliver world-class waves, from legendary rivermouths to consistent beach breaks suitable for all levels.
País Vasco (Basque Country) is the heartland of Spanish surfing. Mundaka stands as the region's crown jewel, widely considered one of the best rivermouth waves in the world. When solid NW swells hit, this left-hand barrel can deliver 150-200 meter rides through perfectly cylindrical tubes. The Billabong Pro ran here for years, showcasing the wave's world-class quality. Zarautz, home to Pukas (Europe's largest board factory), offers a long beach with peaks ranging from mellow shoulders to hollow sections.
Cantabria provides the region's most accessible surf. Somo and Meron deliver consistent, forgiving beach breaks ideal for learners and intermediates. Liencres features excellent beachbreak peaks across multiple sandbars. For experts, Santa Marina is a world-class right-hand reef rideable up to 15 feet, one of Spain's heaviest waves.
Asturias offers dramatic cliffs and hidden coves. Rodiles, the best wave in Asturias, is a rivermouth left comparable to Mundaka, firing on moderate swells during winter months. Salinas stretches wide with fast, barreling beachbreak peaks working through all tides.
Galicia, the remote northwest, boasts mainland Europe's largest swell window at 180°+. Spots like Pantín host pro contests, while countless empty breaks reward exploration. The coastline is rugged, Celtic, and uncrowded.
Autumn (September-November) delivers the ideal combination of consistent NW swells, improving weather, and manageable crowds. Winter brings power but also cold, wet conditions. Summer sees smaller waves but warmer water (18-21°C).

Surf Culture in Northern Spain
Northern Spain has a rich surf culture spanning multiple generations. The Basque Country is the epicenter with the highest concentration of surfers, surf shops, and infrastructure in Spain. Zarautz hosts Pukas, Europe's largest board factory. San Sebastián blends world-class cuisine (Michelin-star pintxos bars) with consistent waves at La Zurriola.
The local vibe varies by region. Basques are passionate about their waves and lineups can be competitive. Asturias has strong localism at spots like Rodiles but friendly communities away from prime breaks. Galicia offers the most mellow atmosphere with remote, uncrowded waves and genuine curiosity from locals toward visiting surfers.
Surf culture integrates with broader Spanish life: late dinners, pintxos hopping, sidra (cider) in Asturias, and txakoli wine in the Basque Country. The October Mundaka contest draws international crowds. Tres60 magazine (since 1987) documents the scene. Despite crowded lineups, violence is rare; locals express frustration verbally rather than physically. Showing respect and surfing within your ability level goes a long way.

ExpertWorld-class left-hand barrel, possibly the best rivermouth wave in the world. Rides can extend 500m+ on solid swells. The October Billabong Pro showcases its power. Requires serious paddle fitness, handles cleanup sets, and knowledge of the sandbar shifts. Not for the inexperienced.
Rodiles
ExpertLocated in Asturias, Rodiles is similar to Mundaka but slightly shorter. Works best on larger autumn to winter swells. Known for heavy localism and competitive lineups. A regional classic that fires on solid NW groundswell.
Santa Marina
ExpertWorld-class right in Cantabria, rideable up to 15ft. A submerged reef that produces powerful, hollow waves. Dangerous rocks at take-off and exit. For experienced chargers only. Needs a medium gun when the swell hits.

Northern Spain Surf Conditions
Weather
Autumn (Sep-Nov): Mild temperatures 15-20°C, occasional rain. Best combination of weather and waves. Water 15-17°C.
Winter (Dec-Mar): Cold and wet with temperatures 8-14°C. Heavy rain common, particularly in Galicia. Strong winds can make conditions challenging. Water drops to 12-14°C. Short daylight hours.
Spring (Apr-May): Improving weather with temperatures 14-18°C. Less rain than winter. Water warming to 14-16°C. Good surf conditions with fewer crowds.
Summer (Jun-Aug): Warmest period at 20-28°C. Less rain but NE sea breezes affect afternoon conditions. Water reaches 18-21°C. Surf early morning before onshore winds. Peak tourist season.
Microclimates: País Vasco is often drier than Galicia and Asturias. Galicia has the highest rainfall. Cantabria sits between the two. Expect changeable conditions year-round.
Water Conditions
Water Temperature:
- Winter (Dec-Mar): 12-14°C (4/3mm fullsuit + booties recommended)
- Spring (Apr-May): 14-16°C (4/3mm or 3/2mm fullsuit)
- Summer (Jun-Aug): 18-21°C (3/2mm or 2mm shorty)
- Autumn (Sep-Nov): 15-18°C (3/2mm or 4/3mm fullsuit)
Tidal Range: Large tidal range of 3-4 meters significantly affects most breaks. Many reef breaks only work at specific tides. Beach breaks are more forgiving. Check tide charts before sessions.
Currents: Strong rips at beach breaks, especially during larger swells. Rivermouths like Mundaka and Rodiles have complex currents. Respect local knowledge.
Hazards: Rocks at reef breaks (Santa Marina, Meñakoz). Pollution at some urban spots. Summer jellyfish in Asturias. Fishing lines near jetties. Large cleanup sets at big-wave spots require fitness and experience.
How to Get to Northern Spain
Airports: Bilbao Airport (BIO) serves País Vasco with connections across Europe. Santander Airport (SDR) is closest for Cantabria. Santiago de Compostela (SCQ) serves Galicia. Asturias has a small airport at Oviedo (OVD).
Getting Around: A rental car is essential for surfing Northern Spain. The coastal roads are scenic but winding; allow extra time. The AP-8 motorway runs east-west connecting Bilbao to Santander. Galicia requires more driving as spots are spread across a rugged coastline.
Parking: Generally good except at popular spots during summer weekends. Mundaka has dedicated parking but fills early on good swells. Remote Galician beaches have free parking but require navigating narrow tracks.
Public Transport: Trains connect major cities (Bilbao, San Sebastián, Santander) but don't reach surf breaks. Buses run coastal routes but are impractical for dawn patrols and chasing swells.
Campervans: Popular option for surf trips. Can park overnight at many beaches outside peak season. The coast road from Galicia to País Vasco is a classic campervan route.
