Surfing Sumatra, Indonesia
Sumatra is one huge beast of an island, the seventh largest on the planet. Its nigh-on 2,000 miles of coastline would be richer than Elon Musk were money made of A-frames and point-break barrels. Yet it remains the most unexplored and untrodden of all the main islands in Indonesia for surfers.
The Krui region in South Sumatra has emerged as the surf hub, sitting at the gateway to around 100 kilometers of swell-sucking shoreline. Ujung Bocur is a monstrous point break that mimics the outer bombies of G-Land, with rides going 100 to 150 meters through semi-hollow sections. Mandiri Beach is ultra-consistent and often empty. Krui Left is a technical, clean barreling wave that locals compare to Binging. Way Jambu offers kamikaze rights with stories of 400-meter runs.
Nias, the largest of Sumatra's Barrier Islands, gets the same huge SW swells as the Ments but can offer breaks for all levels. The Point in Lagundri Bay is the "Madonna" of Nias, a barreling right that's ridiculously consistent with 100% swell consistency in the dry season.
North Sumatra (Aceh) pumps when Bali is flat, getting solid S swells with NE storm winds during the wet season (November-March). South Sumatra follows the traditional dry season (April-October) for the biggest swells.
Unlike Bali's polished tourism infrastructure, Sumatra delivers a rawer, more adventurous experience. The difficulty of getting around, coupled with the spread-out and unknown nature of the breaks, means we recommend a surf camp nine times out of ten. For surfers seeking quality waves without the crowds and that frontier feeling of discovering something special, Sumatra is right on the frontier.
Surf Culture in Sumatra, Indonesia
Sumatra offers a window into traditional Indonesian life largely untouched by mass tourism. The Lampung region maintains strong cultural traditions, with locals welcoming surfers while preserving their way of life.
Cultural notes:
- Predominantly Muslim (unlike Hindu Bali)
- Dress respectfully when away from the beach
- Local communities are welcoming but traditional
The surf vibe:
- Small, tight-knit community: Same faces throughout your stay
- Mellow atmosphere: Focused on surfing, not parties
- Genuine connections with camp staff and local surfers
- Digital detox: Limited connectivity (improving but still sparse)
Daily rhythm: Dawn patrol, Indonesian coffee, afternoon sessions, sunset beers. Life revolves around tides and swells.
Best Surf Spots in Sumatra, Indonesia
Krui (Tanjung Setia)
Intermediate to advancedSouth Sumatra's surf hub, offering multiple breaks along a palm-lined coast. The main peak dishes out punchy lefts and rights over reef, with mellow inside sections for those still finding their feet.
Way Jambu
AdvancedA fast, hollow right that breaks over sharp coral in crystal-clear water. It's one of Krui's most photogenic waves, offering short but intense barrels that reward committed surfers.
Mandiri Beach
Beginner to intermediateThe area's most forgiving wave, breaking over a mix of sand and reef. Great for intermediate surfers looking to build confidence before tackling the sharper reefs nearby.
Ujung Bocur
AdvancedA long, mechanical left that draws serious swell magnets. On its day, it links up section after section down the reef, offering some of the longest rides in the region. Worth the paddle.
Jenny's Right
IntermediateA playful right-hander that works on smaller swells when other spots are flat. Named after the surf camp nearby, it offers fun, rippable walls perfect for practicing turns.
Sumatra Surf Conditions
Weather
Sumatra has two distinct surf regions with different optimal seasons.
South Sumatra (Krui) - Dry Season (April-October):
- Consistent SW swells from the Indian Ocean
- E trade winds blow offshore
- Peak months: June to August when swell is strongest
- Some breaks can be crowded during peak, come on either end of season
North Sumatra (Aceh) - Wet Season (November-March):
- Different monsoon zone, pumps when it's pissing down in Bali
- S swells with NE storm winds that are offshore at key spots
- Now hailed as arguably the best place for low-season surf in Indo
Nias - Dry Season (April-October):
- 100% swell consistency during dry season
- Average 5-10 foot most days, SW swells from Southern Ocean
- Wet season still good (3-5 foot average) but E winds can be onshore
Year-round: Temperatures 28-32ยฐC with high humidity
Water Conditions
Water temperatures stay 27-29ยฐC year-round, so no wetsuit needed.
Essential gear:
- Reef booties: Critical, especially at Ujung Bocur (exposed reef entry)
- Rashguard: Sun protection for long sessions
- First aid kit: Antiseptic for reef cuts (they happen)
- Reef-safe sunscreen
Hazards:
- Sharp, shallow coral at low tide
- Strong currents through channels during tidal changes
- Occasional reef sharks and sea snakes (rare, non-aggressive)
- Seasonal jellyfish (minor concern)
Local knowledge from your surf camp is valuable for understanding each spot.
