Arugam Bay is intermediate surfer heaven. Main Point delivers some of the longest rides you'll ever experience: 500+ meter rights that can last over a minute when conditions align. It's not world-class barrels, and advanced surfers might get bored, but if you're looking to progress on quality right-hand point breaks, you'll leave a better surfer. The lineup rewards good positioning and paddle fitness since the current is constant.

Beyond the waves, what surprises most visitors is how wild it still feels. Drive ten minutes out of town and you're in rice fields dotted with peacocks, water buffalo, and yes, wild elephants (take them seriously, 175 people were killed by elephants in Sri Lanka in 2024). The local food scene is authentic: skip the overpriced tourist cafes and find Mama's for the best rice and curry in town.
