Surfing Taghazout, Morocco
Taghazout stands as Morocco's undisputed surf capital and one of the top surf towns in all of Africa. This former Berber fishing village sits on a dramatic bend of the western Atlantic coast, surrounded by golden sand beaches and rugged headlands that create a wonderland of surf breaks for every level. The iconic right-hand point breaks at Anchor Point and Killer Point have graced magazine covers for decades, while mellow beach breaks at Banana Point and Devil's Rock welcome beginners with soft sand bottoms and patient instructors.

The town's surf history began in the late 1960s when travelers following the African hippy trail discovered the perfect waves wrapping around the headlands. Today, Taghazout has transformed into a world-class surf destination with excellent surf camps, schools, and that authentic Berber vibe still intact. You'll find yourself munching on tagine while watching sunset sessions between the hazy Atlas Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean.

From November through March, powerful N-NW Atlantic swells light up the points with consistent 6-12 foot waves. The dry winter weather delivers offshore easterly winds that groom the famous right-handers into perfect peeling walls. Summer brings stronger north winds and choppier conditions, but the beach breaks still serve up plenty of whitewash for learners and the occasional clean dawn session for early risers.
Whether you're charging the heavy barrels at Killer Point or learning to pop up in the gentle reform at Banana Beach, Taghazout delivers the complete Moroccan surf experience: world-class waves, affordable accommodation, incredible food, and a welcoming surf community that keeps riders coming back year after year.

- Agadir: The nearby city (30 min) for souks, medinas, and nightlife
The vibe: Taghazout caters to every budget, from $15/night surf hostels to boutique riads with plunge pools. The town has cleaned up past pollution issues and now offers a sustainable surf scene led by local camps and schools.
Best Surf Spots in Taghazout, Morocco
Anchor Point
intermediate advancedMorocco's most famous wave. A peeling, long-ride right that comes off a rocky headland. The take-off is at the end of the rock, dropping into a perfectly shaped wall that gets hollow and fast. Sand bottom allows some room for error. Best at 10-12 foot swells.
Killer Point
advancedThe heaviest and most pitching point break in the region. Named after resident orca pods. Even the paddle out takes up to 20 minutes on big days. Fast right with a quick left option. Barrel sections common but speed is key.
Boilers
intermediate advancedSheltered in a wind channel created by Atlas foothills, rarely onshore. Swells of 6-10 foot come in clean creating peeling right-handers. Fast take-off dangerously close to a rusting shipwreck. Speediest tube in town.
Hash Point
beginner intermediateThe de facto main village break where local groms rip after school. A fattish right-hander with more laze than other points. Playful, semi-mellow with nice sectioning on bigger days. Great for improvers moving up from beginner spots.
La Source
intermediateDepending on height, can host all levels. Rock-reef floor but relatively forgiving and fun. At best (mid tide, NW swell, offshore easterlies) forms lovely A-frames rippable in both directions.
Banana Point
beginnerThe beginner mecca of Taghazout, closer to Tamraght village. Mellow, often mushy right-hand point rolling into beach peaks with soft sand bottom. Always packed but healthy contingent of surf schools so novices welcome.
Devil's Rock
beginner intermediateEasy-going sand-bottomed beach break on the long plage south of town. Breaks low and slow, mostly left to right with good winter A-frames. Rides of 50-100m possible. Lovely beach setting.
Panorama
intermediateThe inside section south of Anchor Point on Panorama Beach. Mellow right shoulders refracting into the bay. Not life-changing but fun, playful and sectiony. Best on mid-sized NW pulses.
