About
La Luz Surfcamp sits 100 meters from El Palmar beach on Spain's Costa de la Luz in Andalusia. Run by Bavarian couple Tom and Moni, the camp offers surf lessons, yoga sessions, and Spanish courses in the warmest region of Europe. Operating from mid-September through late May, guests choose between the main lodge with shared rooms and apartments, or the exclusive Casa de Cuore retreat villa for small groups and yoga retreats.
Tom and Moni, former Eisbach surfers from Munich, opened La Luz Surfcamp in El Palmar over 16 years ago. What started as a small family operation has grown while keeping its non-mainstream character - no mass tourism, just a place where couples, singles, friends, families, and the local Spanish staff genuinely feel at home.
The camp is split into two properties. La Luz Lodge sits close to the beach, housing the main accommodations - double and twin rooms with shared bathrooms, private apartments with sea views, and standalone holiday houses for families. The on-site Cafe Dahoam has become a local landmark with its Bavarian-hippie style, fresh daily cakes, fireplace evenings, and occasional live music.
Surf lessons run six days a week, taking small groups to El Palmar's sandy beach break - ideal for beginners - or to surrounding point breaks and reef spots for intermediate and advanced surfers. Conditions here rival Malibu, California, with consistent waves, warm water, and sunshine throughout the autumn, winter, and spring months.
The Casa de Cuore serves as the retreat wing - a Moroccan-Bavarian mountain chalet with sea views, private yoga dome, and space for up to 11 guests. Small groups, yoga retreats, and private coaching sessions happen here, with dedicated kitchen staff preparing Mediterranean, Spanish, and Moroccan meals. The vibe is decidedly different from the main camp - quieter, more contemplative, perfect for those seeking depth alongside their surf holiday.
