About
Boutique surf vacation service in Sayulita, Mexico, offering personalized surf coaching, private accommodation, and guided trips to uncrowded breaks. Run by a small bilingual team with over 10 years of local experience, Variant Surf Co. creates custom packages for individuals, couples, and groups.
Variant Surf Co. started in 2013 as the Chillum Surf House in Sayulita, originally combining a surf shop, accommodations, sushi restaurant, and bar in one location. In 2022, founder Corey Whitley closed the brick-and-mortar spot and relaunched as Variant Surf Co., focusing exclusively on personalized surf vacation experiences.
The shift allowed the team to get more specific about what each guest wants. Instead of walk-ins, everything is now by booking only, letting them tailor each trip to individuals and groups. The result is a more personal experience with dedicated attention from coaches and guides throughout your stay.
Surf lessons cover safety, terminology, etiquette, ocean currents, and tides before you even touch the water. Once in the lineup, you get 2-hour sessions with your surf coach. The team knows every break in the area and picks the spot with the best conditions each day, often ending at KM5, a local surf bar with good food and views.
The crew is small but experienced. Corey has 10 years of hosting and teaching in Sayulita. Robert Valencia is a local native with a lifetime of surf knowledge. Juan Carlos handles photography after shooting surf in Bali, New Zealand, Australia, Peru, and Ecuador. Blanca Monteagudo brings 20 years as a holistic therapist for sports massages. Chivo, originally from Argentina, spent 15 years traveling for surf and cooking, now serving as chef, driver, and surf coach.
The annual Surf & Yoga Retreat runs out of a villa at Litibu Beach, two minutes from a nearly private beach, with pool, ocean views, and daily yoga on the verandas.
