About

Novali Surf Retreat is a family-friendly operation located in the Southern Mentawai Islands, a short ride from the port of Sikakap. Run by local Mentawai surfer Novi and Australian surfer Micky, the retreat combines local knowledge with international hospitality standards.
The Southern Mentawai region is far less crowded than the northern islands, with only a handful of resorts and homestays in the area. This means more empty waves and a more authentic experience of Mentawai culture and lifestyle.
The retreat offers three private bungalows with traditional Mentawai-style palm leaf roofs and handcrafted interiors using locally milled timber and driftwood. Each bungalow has air conditioning, hot and cold showers, a safety box, western toilet, mosquito nets, and surfboard storage. Bungalow K is built directly over the water.
Over 11 surf breaks are accessible, from beginner-friendly waves to world-class barrels. A few secret spots remain off the tourist radar. Long trips to additional waves are available. Daily boat transfers take you to whichever break is working best.
When the surf is flat or you need a break, the retreat offers snorkeling on the reefs, fishing gear, motorbikes to explore the town, visits to the local school and market, jungle treks to a waterfall, and cultural experiences in nearby villages. The spacious bar has a pool table, darts, karaoke, and movies for evening entertainment.
The location near Sikakap means a hospital and bank are just 5 minutes away, and the area served as a safe zone during the 2010 tsunami. Three meals daily combine western and Indonesian cuisine, with dietary requirements accommodated upon request.
